Shawn O'Keefe, PA-C
Shawn O'Keefe founded Twenty-One Medical to practice medicine the way he thought it should be practiced — one clinic, one provider, and a view of the whole patient rather than a subset of symptoms.
He has spent nearly five years in primary care at this practice. Before opening it, he ran a surgical contracting company, first-assisting in the operating room across orthopedics, general surgery and OBGYN. That range is the reason a single clinic here can handle a sports physical, a DOT exam, a torn meniscus and a hormone program without sending you anywhere else.
Shawn served in the United States Marine Corps. He is the father of two daughters, and outside the clinic he can usually be found at the gym, at the movies, or somewhere on a Spartan Race course with his family nearby.
Orthopedics and sports medicine
Before primary care, Shawn spent his career in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine, treating orthopedic and sports-related injuries.
He has worked with athletes at every level — from Pop Warner football through college, Olympic and professional athletes — and keeps a particular interest in sports injuries and pediatric orthopedics.
That is why a teenager's sprained ankle and a weekend runner's knee are handled here rather than referred across town, and why the sports physicals this clinic does are done by someone who has spent years on the other end of those injuries.
Why the practice is built this way
Most patients end up with their care split across four places that do not talk to each other — a primary care office, somewhere to go when that office is full, a specialist across town, and somewhere different again for anything labelled wellness.
Twenty-One Medical puts all of it in one building with one chart. That is also why the wellness side of this clinic runs on examination, labs and follow-up instead of a questionnaire and a prescription pad: it is the same provider, held to the same standard, whether you came in for a sore throat or a hormone panel.
